(OPride) – At least 100 Oromo refugees living in Cairo gathered outside the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Sunday to protest against increased harassment from Egyptians angry over Nile dam.

They called on UNHCR and Egyptians authorities to provide them with better protection. The protesters also said they “fled Ethiopia due to political and ethnic persecution, also spoke out against Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam,” according to Egyptian News Agency, Ahram Online. Estimated at over 40 million, the Oromo are Ethiopia’s single largest ethnic group.

The Oromo community in Egypt should do more work to convince the people and government of Egypt on the distinction between Oromos and Habeshas. Habeshas have anti-Egyptian mentality.

We have no anti egyptian mentality, but when they threaten us with war only because we intend to use what is ours, this changes! Call me any thing you like, I as oromo support construction of the dam 100%. One must be primitive and myopic to not look beyond wayyane that the Dam will impact millions of our citizens generations from now. Opposing dam construction means feeling happy when millions of our people die of hunger every year, like egyptians. I actually read that egyptians are beating oromo refugees because they refused Morsis offer when he approached them. If I were them, I would accept all his cash and training, take his F16s, overthrow wayyanee, and divert Abaya to Wallo, tigray, Afar, shawa, harar! With your current attitude I sure you endorse if Morsi bombs Finfinne, are threfore on the loser side, once again. Oromos must support the dam construction, because this a development project that outlives wayyane. I think if Oromo organizations oppose it, they are only farther isolating themselves from the people.
