National Regional State Symbols in Ethiopian Federation

National Regional State Symbols in Ethiopian Federation

In federal arrangements around the world, it’s customary that Federated States establish (select) state-wide symbols that reflect their States’ proud history and hopeful future, or primary representations of certain categories: examples are State flags, State songs/anthems (see USA‘s and India‘s, for instance), State birds, State foods, State animals, etc. The mature Indian federation resembles that of Ethiopia, in that, it’s a multinational/multilinguistic one. Though Ethiopia’s multinational federation has a long way to go to democratize and mature, it’s encouraging to see Ethiopia’s Federated States are asserting their constitutional rights of self-rule as it has recently been witnessed by Oromiyaa’s and Tigray’s rejection of the centrally-mandated Education Policy of the Federal Ministry of Education.

Though the Federated National Regional States in Ethiopia have yet to establish/select various symbols of representation, all do have State flags, and some of them, such as Oromiyaa and Tigray, have selected official State anthems/songs, which they perform at official State events. Below are the National Regional State anthems of Oromiyaa and Tigray. Compiling State symbols does help build a better Ethiopian federation based upon respect for each other, without one State imposing its values on the others and disregarding the aspirations of the Federated States for peaceful coexistence.
