Oromia-Ethiopia: Zenawi – Land in Highlands (Abyssinia) off Limits, in Lowlands Up for Grabs

The following video clip is from the World Economic Forum on Africa, which was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on May 6, 2010. At the conference, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Meles Zenawi, outlined his regime’s land policy.

Here he talks about how land in the highlands (Abyssinia) is off limits while land in the lowlands is up for grabs, and vowed to continue to hand over land in the lowlands to foreign “investors.” These foreign “investors” are actually foreign governments buying land in corruption-plagued Ethiopia and shipping the grains farmed there into their respective countries, a modern-day gebbar system (serfdom), where the feudal lords are now foreign governments and the corrupted Ethiopian government officials. Peasants in the lowlands will now become day laborers on a dime per day wages on farms owned by foreign “investors” – equivalent to becoming modern-day plantation slaves.

Meles telling us that he can do whatever he likes to do because the people in the lowland (Oromo and the people in the south of the empire) are his slaves. Slavery in its clear form. What do we say my people? Sit and watch while this going on in our father land?
Do some thing in your locals-whether you are in Oromia or abroad.

    Hi,

It is a disrespect for the oromo people as well as others, this land is kept so far by the blood of the people of the country. They sacrificed their life for it, for any war happened in ethiopia, today that land is being sold without any concent of the people, change the law of the land with out any concent of the people of the country. That country did not face this type of disrespect from any body. All fought for the land and the people of the country,we have never seen such disgrace by own leader.

The people died for it, it is enough to see the monument at sidest kilo that 12000 people died with in one day for defending this land from facsist Italia. So how this land is offered for selling, it is a disgrace, disrespect and being devaluing the people of the country as a whole. This needs “KItet Zemecha” or “dula hunda”(in affaan oromo). The people in ethiopia the oromo, amahara and others know to defend their value, respect and freedom. They will rise up one day and defend thier value. You know that Mr. Meles ethiopians never waited any body to defend thier value, they did it by them selves, they will do it by them selves.Do you think leaders before you can’t sell it?they didn’t sell it because they know it is our value.Better to stop it.

“ulfinaa offii abatu egeta”jedha oromon. Yes,All people Oromo,Amhara and others stand up, to defend your value and respect!!!

    thanks,

As a Somali I find this absolutley crazy. Low land area of Oromia has a population of 30 million people and SNNPR has a population 15 million. Oromos and Somalis as well as sidama we have to unite. Extermination, slavery is occuring to our people. Look at what slavery has done to people in the Americas.

It is disrepect for Oromos and the likes. As Oromo elders used to say ” Haadha manaa Abbaa manaa tuffatan mogolee ilaalu jedhama”. I beleive we did it to ourselves. Meles found the Oromoo People and Oromoo land as a personnal gift to him and his government, so that he can do what even he want to do with them. He knows through time one will defend the Oromoo and Oromia.
