Ethiopia: Environmental Record of PM Zenawi – Pollution of Akaki River

As the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Meles Zenawi, prepares to head to the UN Copenhagen Climate Chance conference next month as Africa’s lead negotiator, many are questioning his moral authority to be given such a position while his government pillages the environment in Ethiopia under the pretext of ‘development.’

On the outskirts of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, lies the town of Akaki and the Akaki River; besides serving as a trash dumping site for the city of Addis Ababa, the Akaki River is also contaminated from deadly chemicals streaming from nearby tanneries and other small-scale factories. Here’s a video showing the appalling state of the Akaki River and how people lives are affected by it (by Kiran Khalid of the VJ Movement).
