The top opposition party during the 2005 election, Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ), formed a union with other opposition parties and former EPRDF officials under the umbrella Medrek, despite its leader Judge Birtukan Mideksa still in prison.

MEDREK is a platform for democratic consultation and discourse established by various opposition party members and former ruling party officials who have left the ruling EPRDF coalition.

Its participants included former President Negasso Gidada (as independent), former Defence Minister Siye Abraha (as independent) and opposition parties Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM), led by Bulcha Demeksa, United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF) represented by Beyene Petros and Dr. Merera Gudina as well as new parties A.R.E.N.A Tigray and Coalition of Somali Democratic Forces from the Ogaden region.
