Oromia-Ethiopia: Oromian Athlete Meseret Defar Tola Needs Your Vote

Posted: Onkoloolessa/October 23, 2010 · Finfinne Tribune | Gadaa.com | Comments (7)

The reigning 3K World Indoor Champion, Meseret Defar Tola, is a candidate for this year’s International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Athlete of the Year.

IAAF cited the following as a reason for Meseret Defar’s selection:

World Indoor and Continental Cup titles at 3000m. World lead 14:24.79 at 5000m, set indoors

It is to be remembered that Meseret Defar was crowned as the IAAF World Athlete of the Year in 2007 along with Tyson Gay of U.S.A. In 2006 Meseret Defar was among the top-three shortlisted nominees for the Athlete of the Year honor.

Meseret Defar is competing with 9 other women athletes for this year’s IAAF World Athlete of the Year honor. IAAF gives fans of the athletes a unique opportunity to help select the Athlete of the Year. Three athletes, with the most votes from fans as well as IAAF affiliated members, will be presented as finalists to a Special Jury of the International Athletic Foundation, which will then decide the winners of this year’s IAAF World Athlete of the Year title.

Athletes Haile Gebreselassie (1998) and Kenenisa Bekele (2004 and 2005), both hailing from Oromia, were crowned as IAAF World Athlete of the Year in the respective years shown. For the first time in several years, Kenenisa Bekele has not made this year’s top-ten IAAF athletes list.
